Welcome to the Cape Kelp Forest Trail
Fall in love with this incredible macro algae, thriving in the cool waters just off the magnificent beaches of Cape Town, South Africa. Through artistic and educational experiences, that include kelp forest exploration, learn about the cultural heritage so strongly intertwined with this mesmerising environment, meet the protectors of this coastal habitat, and find out more about the research-based conservation of this incredible resource.
our mission
The incredible kelp forest is a vital component of the Cape Peninsula ecosystem, an abundance of life thriving in this coastal refuge. The only giant sea bamboo forest on the planet, this highly productive marine ecosystem is a protected nursery area, a major carbon sink, by removing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the ocean, a coastal buffer during storm surges and contributing to the ocean-generated oxygen in the air that we breathe. Kelp fosters a strong connection between the marine and terrestrial environments when it’s cast ashore, its shoreward journey being just as important in nutrient and shelter provision as its initial marine contribution. Conserving the integrity of this marine system is key in our climate change survival.
Meet our Team
Growing up in Kommetjie, the kelp forest is an integral part of my life. As a Marine Biologist and Nature Conservationist, the importance of this ecosystem is unmistakable and I aim to encourage protection through understanding
I have a background in foundation phase education and was a class teacher for 12 years. I am passionate about conservation and inspiring change, and enjoy introducing people to the wonders of nature
I am a palaeontologist and geoscience educator explaining science through storytelling puppetry and the arts. Our shows and art-integrated workshops cover history of life, marine science, space exploration and climate change
